Search engine optimisation (SEO) is important. Without it, your site will almost certainly be consigned to the digital equivalent of outer space - somewhere we know exists but don't currently visit. Check out these simple SEO tips and tricks to give yourself the best possible advantage in the search results. 1. Get your on-page SEO right Search engine optimisation begins with your own site. If that's not good - if your website designer didn't bother with it because it interfered with their nice looking design, for instance - then you've got a major handicap before you begin. There are lots of courses out there that deal with on-page SEO but essentially you need to check that your page titles, headlines, images and text are all related to the keyword your page is targeting. You need to do this for each and every page on your site without getting too repetitive and without it looking or sounding spammy. 2. Check your HTML code is valid There's an official standard for HTML (the apparent gobbledegook that tells web browsers how to display your site). Your web designer should have checked that this is valid and correct but may not have done. Run your main index page through one of the free online page validators. Then fix any errors it finds as otherwise they run the risk of hampering your SEO efforts. 3. Start small Sure, you want to dominate the world or at least your town. But you need to start small with SEO, otherwise you won't see results before you get bored. Pick off a handful of "easy wins" - keyword phrases with little to no competition that even all those monkeys trying to type Shakespear could manage to beat. You may only get a dusting of traffic for these terms but multiplied by a dozen or two terms, that mounts up. This has a couple of advantages: when people type in these low volume terms, they're desperate! They haven't found an answer earlier in their searching so if you provide that, they'll likely spend money with you. The other main advantage is that because these are low competition keywords, chances are you don't have to do much to come up high in the search results. Which is great encouragement! 4. Don't expect overnight results Google is way too big for that to happen unless your website is about a brand new news event. Then you'll get shot to the top of the search results. Only to be dropped into oblivion in a day or two once the next big "must read" news event takes place. It's far better to wait the weeks or months it takes for a new page to appear in the search results and then watch it stay there for months or years. Of course, you shouldn't wait while his happens. You should carry on producing more tip-top content for your website. 5. Write it right Google knows when your grammar and spelling is sub-par. It has lots of other sites that it can compare it with. Take the time to check your spelling and grammar. At the very least, use the built-in option in your word processor. But if you know you'd fail a GCSE in English, get someone else to check your site's content for you. This is a major player in the search results because it affects the experience of people visiting your sites and Google doesn't want to be guilty by association.
